The Engineering Salary Calculator searches over 360,000 salary records in the engineering salary database, and returns your salary result based on experience, education, job function, industry and skills — for over 400 cities and regions throughout the United States.

Your query is computed within a 50 mile radius of the selected location, using a minimum of 100 matching salary profiles. Compensation data older than 365 days is excluded. If you select a a location that does not contain at least 50 matching salary records, the search area expands to 75 miles, then to a 90 mile radius.

In the case of a unique skill set combination (if the database can't locate more than 25 matches for the location using the 50-75-90 rule), it will expand the boundaries to state — and finally nationwide. In densely populated metros like New York City, Boston or San Jose, your salary result is compiled using hundreds or thousands of records (in most categories) — but in less populated areas (such as ND, SD, NM, WY, MT, AK, HI and ME) the search has to expand to a wider area to provide a more distributed population density — and a relevant salary comparison.

The calculator is designed to always return a result. There are cases where it will not return a local result, such as: BS in Mechanical Engineering, working as the Chief Engineer for a Nanotechnology company - located in Montana. In cases where a search produces an insufficient amount of matches nationally (threshold <250), the result is compiled by performing an interpolation of all available similar data. An unreasonable set (Biomedical Engineer working in RF Engineering with skills in Aerodynamics) will generate a result that would not be credible.

User testing since April, 2000 has indicated that in greater than 96% of salary searches, the result is accurate to within <4%. Because the salary data is derived from employers (rather than salary surveys, ranges or estimates), hundreds of companies feel that it is the most accurate source for engineering and technical salary information available nationally. Technology companies nationwide use similar compensation data to determine competitive salaries for their employees. See user comments.

To maximize security, the database resides on a separate secure server - and your result is sent via email.

Benefits are difficult to attach a specific dollar amount to, so a base salary less benefits is reported.
